MR Fluid Brake

MR Fluid Brake is a innovative electric brake adapted for environmental needs and automatic driving technologies. It does not produce friction dust, sound and vibration, and has excellent responsiveness and controllability corresponding to motorized / automated operations of automobiles. The MR Fluid Brake incorporates MR Fluid (Magneto Rheological Fluid) which instantaneously changes from a liquid state to a semi-solid state through an external magnetic field.

The MR Fluid Brake incorporates MR Fluid (Magneto Rheological Fluid) which instantaneously changes from a liquid state to a semi-solid state through an external magnetic field.

Composition and characteristics of the MR fluid

The MR fluid is composed of micro-scale ferromagnetic particles suspended in the carrier oil. When a magnetic field is applied, these particles form iron powder clusters which solidifies the MR fluid between the active magnetic poles.

Structure and Mechanism of the MR Fluid Brake

Rotatable discs are attacked to the power shaft and fixed discs are configured to the vehicle’s mounting portion. The gaps between the discs are filled with the MR fluid. When the magnetic field is activated by applying an electric current through the coil, ferromagnetic particles floating in the MR fluid form iron powder clusters.

When braking, the initial rotation of the discs forces the clusters to shear and reform continuously between the rotatable discs and the fixed discs. This resistance acts as the braking force.

Future Plans

Akebono started research and development on Ultra-compact EV with Professor Nakano of Tohoku University and completed the MR Fluid Brake prototype in March, 2015. We will continue to test and improve the MR Fluid Brake as a smart brake suitable for smart cities and smart mobility, targeting 2020 for implementation.

We will continue our research and development to build original technologies in all fields that are related to Akebono’s core technology: “Friction and Vibration, their Control and Analysis”.
