Akebono to Supply Brake Systems to McLaren P1™ - Launching High-Performance Brake Business
Tokyo - (February 26, 2013) - Akebono Brake Industry Co., Ltd. (Akebono) has announced plans to supply its renowned brake system including brake caliper, pad and disk components for the McLaren P1TM, the latest ultra high performance road car from the British sports car brand.
Akebono began its collaboration with Vodafone McLaren Mercedes in 2007, developing and refining its braking technologies at the cutting edge of global motorsport competition. The company carefully focuses on each aspect of its brake systems, including materials, structure and surface processing, to ensure optimal performance in each area. In 2011, the Akebono brake system was selected for the McLaren 12C GT3 and FIA GT series racing cars.
Based on technologies cultivated in motorsports such as F1 and GT3, the state-of-the-art McLaren P1TM brake system features a new type of carbon ceramic disc never used on a road car before. Stronger than conventional carbon ceramic, the material dissipates heat more effectively, giving the highly efficient braking system exceptional stopping and cooling capability. The system also boasts significantly reduced weight, and a bespoke carbon ceramic layer coats both friction surfaces to produce an attractive mirrored finish. Moreover, both McLaren and Akebono logos are shown on the caliper as an emblem of their partnership.
Akebono has established a mid-term business plan, dubbed akebono New Frontier 30-2013, with a focus on making a difference by creating next-generation technologies, and preparing for the launch of its high-performance brake business. Launching the supply project for the McLaren P1TM is the first step in the high-performance road car market for Akebono, which will take this step to expand its business still further in the future.
