AKEBONO REPORT 2011 Akebono Brake Industry Co. Ltd. 15Energy Conservation Activities (China and the United States)Akebono Corporation (Suzhou) in China is engaged in energy conservationactivities ranging from the use of natural lighting in itsplant buildings introduction of invertors for its compressors rationalizationof facility operation hours reduction of industrial wasteand streamlining of production activities. As a result AkebonoCorporation (Suzhou) was accredited as a Clean ManufacturingCompany that contributes to the preservation of the local environment receiving a certificate and monetary award from theAdministration Committee of the Suzhou Industrial Park.Akebono Engineering Center (AEC) in the United States has set upsolar power generation panels that on a yearly basis can generateelectricity equivalent to the annual consumption of approximatelyfive average Japanese households (21 000kWh). These panelsallow AEC to cut its CO2 emissions per year by approximately 14tons. The panels can also be used as awnings for upper story windows thereby enhancing air-conditioning efficiency. In the UnitedStates where coal-fired thermal power is the prime means ofpower generation it is anticipated that solar power generationwill play a role in reducing CO2 emissions.CO2 Emissions in akebono’s Overseas OperationsIn each the country in which akebono operates because of thevariety of energy sources used?oil coal nuclear hydroelectric oreven wind generation?to generate the same amount of electricpower the level of CO2 emissions may differ. In France wherenuclear power is the main source of energy the volume of CO2emissions per unit of electric power is one-fifth that of Japan. Theadvance of globalization has spurred akebono over the past fewyears to increase production volumes in countries with greaterelectricity to CO2 conversion factors than Japan. akebono is takingsteady steps to reduce CO2 emissions while considering local conditions. The CO2 emissions of two facilities in the United Statesand two facilities in Asia were included in the figure for theGroup’s total CO2 emissions in fiscal 2010 this data thus coversall akebono production facilities.Trends in akebono CO2 Emissions(t)0 40 000 80 000 120 000 160 000 200 000 240 000’08’09’10(Year) United States Japan Asia (excluding Japan) EuropeThe certificate from theAdministration Committee of theSuzhou Industrial ParkUnited States: Akebono Brake Elizabethtown Plant (ABE)In fiscal 2010 ABE reduced its CO2 emissions equivalent to 968tons (based on the waste calculator program of the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency) by recycling waste materials including cardboard and waste plastics. Scrap metals 688 tonsof which were classed as scrap cast iron and 24 tons as recycledaluminum were sent offsite. On April 22 2010 ABE tied up withthe Hardin County Government and other local companies for anEarth Day event and set up a booth for the recycling of home electronics. On September 18 2010 ABE was a cosponsor alongwith the Hardin County Government and host of the third annualHousehold Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event. ABE wholeheartedlycooperated in this local event collecting a total of26 252 pounds (approximately 12 tons) of materials. Thecompany received a letter of appreciation from the HardinCounty Government for this achievement. The letter of appreciation from theHardin County GovernmentThe third annual HHW collection event(September 18 2010)United States: Akebono Brake Columbia Plant (ABCS)ABCS strives to reduce the environmental burden posed by thetransportation of general waste products and industrial waste. Forexample if fluorescent bulbs are broken during transportation themercury contained in the bulb (approximately 8mg per bulb) willscatter and may negatively impact the environment. In order toprevent such accidents ABCS installed a bulb crusher whichsafely processes bulky and fragile bulbs and worked to cuttransport costs by reducing its overall waste volume.Bulb crusher: Using a triple-layer filter this unit firstseparates glass metal caps and other materials intocollection receptacles then turns mercury into aninsoluble mercuric sulfide to recover it safely.Bulbs are inserted into the opening of the crusherHighlights of Fiscal 2010 ActivitiesEnvironmental ReportFeature Social Repor t Environmental Report Economic Repor t Reference Materials
