Ltd.We Continue to Provide Wide-Ranging Support in the Devastated AreasResponse to the Great East Japan EarthquakeSupport for Local CommunitiesSince September 2011 we have been providing access to thefacilities and premises of the former Akebono Brake MiharuManufacturing Co. Ltd. for use as a local kindergarten an elementaryschool and a junior-high school. This move was madeas part of support activities for the former residents ofTomioka-machi Fukushima who were forced to seek refugeaway from home due to the radioactive pollution brought by theaccidents at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.Currently some 80 children are commuting to the kindergartenand schools. From February 2012 the premises have housed asupport center for the elderly as well.Supporting Restoration through Our BusinessAfter the Great East Japan Earthquake struck we launched the“Tohoku Project ” mainly through the Sendai Sales Office’sAftermarket Sales Division. There was some anxiety that brakes might malfunction dueto salt damage caused by the tsunami. Salt can deteriorate variousparts of a brake in addition to contributing to the rusting ofmetal components. To prevent brakes from losing their effectiveness cars in the devastated areas had to be properlychecked and repaired. Our “Tohoku Project” was launched toprovide parts that were in short supply to automobile repairshops and end-users in the devastated areas thereby supportingrestoration efforts. Project activities are still ongoing. As part of the project we dispatched the “brake technologyeducation patrol car ” aiming to enlighten people about the dangerof salt damage to cars; offered automobile repair shops inthe devastated areas; andprovided information andknow-how on fixing rustybrakes while supportingbrake repair activities. Theproject provided support toover 500 automobile mechanicsin 43 automobile repairshops.Other Restoration Support ActivitiesTOPICS■Promoting Recyclable EnergyAkebono associates participated in the “SagaeSakuranbo Ouen-Tai” (a local volunteer group;May 28 2011 Kesennuma City Miyagi)Associates from Sanyo Manufacturing andFukushima Manufacturing entertained peoplein the devastated areas with performances ofJapanese drums (July 3 2011 Koori-machi Fukushima)The Tohoku restoration support shop featuringfood products from the Tohoku region (Summerfestival at Iwatsuki Manufacturing August 25 2011)Akebono offered land to the Tatebayashi SolarPark which achieves the equivalent of a 206ton reduction in CO2 emissions annually(Tatebayashi City Gunma)Observing the Devastated AreaThe brake technology education patrol carEducational activitiesLeaflet explaining how to fix salt-damaged brakes The official opening ceremony for the kindergarten elementary school and juniorhighschool (September 1 2011)President Hisataka Nobumoto visited Kesennuma City with suppliers from thedevastated areas to get a firsthand look at the damage situation (March 2 2012)● TOPICS■Volunteer activities
