In principle, substances for which the amount handled is less than one ton per year are not included;however, substances marked by double asterisks (**) have been included in the chart and amounts exceeding 0.5 ton per year are indicated.Atmosphere Rivers Transported amountTransported amountEmission volume (atmosphere and rivers)’02 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 (FY)(t) (t)05101520025507510012517.72.445.915.312.91.99.1 9.6 9.810.60.0 0.0 0.0 0.0 0.023.8 22.5 26.5 24.129.523.0Emission Volume of PRTR Designated Substances (atmosphere and rivers),Amount Transported (waste)*In fiscal 2011, the amount transported was revised accompanying the exclusion ofmetallic zincs due to the change in definition of water-soluble zinc compoundsReduction of Hazardous Chemical SubstancesThe PRTR (Pollutant Release and Transfer Register) is thelegal system obliging business operators who handle potentiallyhazardous chemical substances to identify, collate anddisclose information on such substances, including data onwhere the substances are generated and emitted andwhether the substances are transported off premises mixedwith waste. The Pollutant Release and Transfer Law (PRTR Law) forthe Promotion of Chemical Management, which is the basisof the above system, requires such business operators torecord the amount of such substances they handle, emitand transport. In April 2001, 354 substances were listed asClass I Designated Chemical Substances requiring surveysand reports to business operators. A revision of the lawenacted in October 2009 further extended the scope of listedsubstances to 462, and established 100 Class IIDesignated Chemical Substances. Business operators handlingor manufacturing designated chemical substancesmust monitor the amount of such substances that are emittedinto the environment as well as the amount transportedoff premises in waste or sewage water for disposal. Also, these matters must be annually reported to the competentauthorities. To reduce emissions of such chemical substances, Akebonohas been introducing powdered paints as well as paints thatcontain lower amounts of organic solvents. As a result, theCompany’s emission volume of PRTR designated substancesdecreased 45% to 9.8 tons in fiscal 2012, comparedwith 17.7 tons in fiscal 2002, the year PRTR law wasenforced. In addition, Akebono completely abolished theuse of hexavalent chromium at all its bases in 2007.Environmental ManagementFiscal 2012 Emission Volume of PRTR Designated Chemical SubstancesThrough the monitoring, reduction and proper management of hazardous chemical substances,we strive to minimize their emissions to the environment.
