Teaching Akebono’s Unique ManufacturingApproachOpened in 2011 within the premises of the Ai-City headquarters,the Monozukuri Center serves as a forum for short-term intensivetraining courses on the principles of manufacturing and is alwaysopen to anyone in Akebono. With an emphasis on teaching traineesto think, work out problems for themselves and offer innovativesolutions, the center nurtures engineers capable of reinforcingthe foundation of Akebono’s manufacturing strengths. The educationalmaterials used in training courses are prepared by the lecturersthemselves. In addition, the center plays an essential role indisseminating our manufacturing approach to bases all around theworld. Specifically, since 2012 the center has been proactivelyorganizing “Fundamental Skills Training School” courses at overseaslocations. This initiative began at sites in the United States andAsia to instruct local trainer candidates and has subsequentlyexpanded to include other regions. At present, 25 trainer candidateshave completed their instruction and gained qualification,and they are now serving as Fundamental Skills Training Schooltrainers at six locations overseas. Fiscal 2013 Fundamental Skills Training Schools Held atOverseas LocationsCurrently, Fundamental Skills Training Schools for overseas sites arebeing organized at four locations in North America and one locationin Indonesia, with a number of associates undergoing trainingcourses. Meanwhile, the Monozukuri Center in Japan has accepted555 trainees from domestic locations and 46 from overseas locationsduring fiscal 2013.With Our Associates Localizing Training ProgramsIn March 2014, we established the first North AmericanMonozukuri Center at Akebono Brake Corporation (ABC). Thenew center kicked off operations with a five-day training course inApril 2014 that taught the basics of Akebono’s manufacturingapproach. Looking ahead, we intend to provide training programstailored to the needs of overseas locations while enhancing contenteven further. Open SeminarsIn fiscal 2013, the Monozukuri Center in Japan launched a newtraining program focused on 3 Basic Sheets (Standardized WorkCombination Table, Standardized Production Capacity Sheet andStandardized Work Chart) while initiating a workshop-style trainingprogram on the utilization of a production survey sheet. The formerprogram has participants identify and remedy problems in manufacturingprocesses. The latter program is not only for on-site operatorsbut also directors and associates at the general manager leveland aims to facilitate understanding of significance of key indicatorspresented in the production survey sheet. In fiscal 2014, weare providing a greater number of associates with training opportunitiesthat spur their motivation to learn. Akebono Brake Astra Indonesia (AAIJ) 134Facilitating Robust Communications across the BoardTOPICSSince its April 2005 issue, every edition of Akebono’s in-housenewsletter has featured a dialogue between the president andassociates under the title of “Let’s talk with Mr. Nobumoto!” Tomark round 100 of these sessions, the July 2013 issue’s dialogueinvolved approximately 100 associates. Many associateshave benefited from the dialogue series as they have been ableto stay apprised of challenges that they face in common anddirectly learn the opinions and advice of the president.Also, each business unit is working to facilitate communicationsbetween directors, general managers and young associatesby holding gatherings for the exchange of opinions.Moreover, in fiscal 2014 we began to publish the President’sMessage newsletter at North American locations to encouragelocal associates to interact with the president while issuingmonthly ActivitiesCommittee Newslettersthat feature such contentas information onin-house events activitiesand programs.The 100th round of “Let’s talk with Mr. Nobumoto!”
