Occupational Safety and Health ManagementStriving to ensure the safety and health of its associates, theAkebono Group established the Occupational Safety and HealthManagement Structure, with the aim of thoroughly addressingvarious risks related to its operations, including disasters, accidentsand other emergencies.Placing the utmost emphasis on securing the safety of our personnel,we have set the rules that allow no newly recruited associateor contract worker to engage in actual operations unless theyhave undergone the required safety education. We also distributeNeed-to-Know about Safety, a booklet summarizing importantsafety issues, to all associates to raise their safety awareness.Response to the Problem of AsbestosWell ahead of other domestic companies, Akebono began thedevelopment of asbestos-free products in the 1970s. Not only didwe complete the transition to asbestos-free products for new carsby 1994, we have not manufactured service parts containingasbestos since 2000.In July 2005, Akebono launched the “Asbestos SpecialCommittee” and established a “Health Consultation Room” withineach Group company, implementing complementary health checksfor neighbors, ex-associates and their family members. In total,613 people underwent health checks as of March 31, 2014. Weplan to continue health checks in the future.On November 28, 2012, a lawsuit was filed against Akebono byex-associates and bereaved families of ex-associates, demandingcompensation for health damage allegedly attributable to asbestoscontained in its products. As of April 30, 2014, hearings were heldon nine occasions. We will respond to their claims for such damagewith sincerity.Frequency of Occupational Accidents(frequency of lost work time) Safety Records at Overseas LocationsAs a result of initiatives aimed at reducing occupational accidents,the frequency of lost work time due to occupational accidents infiscal 2013 was 0.3, a record low.Initiatives Aimed At Raising Safety andHealth AwarenessEvery year, we hold a “Safety Promotion Convention” during whatJapan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has designated as“safety week” (July 1 to 7) while organizing a “Health PromotionConvention” in concert with the “National Occupational HealthWeek” (October 1 to 7) designated by said ministry.At these conventions, prizes are given to associates who havemade significant contributions to safety and health promotion overthe past fiscal year. At the same time, lectures on occupationalsafety and health take place.
