energy resource. The utilization of this system is expected to contributeto energy savings by the generation of renewable electricity. As such, our proactive energy-saving efforts were judged as making great contributionsto the mitigation of the environmental burden. We will continuewith our environmental impact reduction initiatives.* A power generation system that employs the evaporation of a medium with a low boilingpoint. While conventional steam electric generators use superheated 150°C orhotter steam to drive their turbines, binary power generators drive turbines using lowergrade70°C-to-120°C heat sources that include regular steam or even hot water.Enhancing the Content of Environmental andSafety EducationWith the aim of securing sustainable development through in-houseeducation, Akebono provides Education for Sustainable Development(ESD). While incorporating ESD in new recruit training and variousother in-house education programs, theCompany has established an across-theboardeducation system targeting allassociates to raise their environmentalawareness. For example, our online educationsystem offers 52 courses on such subjectsas ISO 14001 and the global historyof environmental pollution. The systemallows associates to take these coursesat work desk, at home, or even whenthey are on a trip abroad. The Company is making the most ofthe advantages offered by both onlineeducation and hands-on experience.Meanwhile, the Environmental Dojo, atraining center in Hanyu City, SaitamaPrefecture, hosts environmentaleducationprograms centered on providinghands-on experience. One such programinvolves growing firefl ies with the aim ofnurturing awareness of how importantand difficult biodiversity preservation is.Other programs include collecting CO2gas and compressed air leaking fromequipment in plastic bags for a real-worldhands-on lesson on the actual volume ofsuch emissions and leakage.ISO Certifications, Environmental Audits and EducationWhile implementing environmentaleducation programs, we are acquiring ISO certification at business sites worldwide andmaintaining it through periodic audits.Renewal of ISO CertificationsSince the former Akebono Brake Miharu Manufacturing Co., Ltd.became the first ISO 14001-certified facility in the Akebono Groupin 1999, all Group members in Japan have obtained the ISO 14001certification. To date, each has continuously passed two to foursuccessive renewalexaminations while extending the scope of theirenvironmental initiatives to include back-office sections as well astheir suppliers. Akebono Brake, Elizabethtown Plant (ABE) andother Group members overseas were also certified, with a majorityof them completing renewal procedures in fiscal 2013.Note: ISO 14001: An international standard for environmental management systemsissued by the International Organization for Standardization. The next revision ofISO 14001 is scheduled for 2015.reflecting the Results of Audits in theEnvironmental Management SystemSpecifically to demonstrate this Akebono conducts both external andinternal audits, we receive external audits which also included therequired once per three years audits for ISO 14001 recertification.Additionally, Akebono conducts an internal and external audit to ensureour success. In the latest external audit held in fiscal 2013, the auditors pointedout failure to promptly communicate non-conformance report to thesecretariat. In response, the company corrected this condition byrequiring the secretariat to issue the audit results instead of the departmentthat was subject to the audit. Moreover, we have revised theenvironmental committee’s monthly meeting agenda to make sure thatthe committee regularly confirms the progress of environmental auditingunder way.On the other hand, our environmental management system wasvalued as appropriately established and operated. Specifically, the introductionof a binary-cycle power generation system* was highly rated.Employing the evaporation of a low-boiling point medium, the systemcollects and makes full use of low-grade heat, a previously untappedEnvironmental Management*Total for six operations (Yamagata, Fukushima, Tatebayashi, Iwatsuki, Sanyo and Ai-City Headquarters)Number of Staff Holding Major Environment-Related Qualifications(as of March 31, 2014)Internalenvironmental auditor 221Pollution control manager 31Water quality 12Atmosphere 11Noise and vibration 8Energy manager 9Specially controlled industrial waste administrator 7100 10 1Name of qualification Number* of staffRenewal Schedule (Year)ISO 14001 CertifiedGroup Members and Operations00/0300/0302/0302/0303/0310/0303/0307/0701/0501/0701/0702/0801/1004/0904/0902/0108/1109/1210/09CertifiedRenewal Audit (three-year cycle)’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 ’13 ’14Notes:1. 00/03 means “certified in March 2000.”2.
