What are electric brake systems?

Electric brake systems are systems that include electrically powered devices involved in the process from driver input to brake actuation, as well as the connections in between. In such systems, when the mechanism that presses the disc brake pads against the brake rotor remains hydraulically actuated as in conventional systems, while the parking brake mechanism is operated by an electric actuator, the system is referred to as an electric parking brake.

Features of electric parking brakes

  • Instead of the conventional parking lever, which requires the driver to operate by hand or foot, the electric parking brake can be engaged or released with a switch, reducing the driver’s workload.
  • The automatic function helps prevent drivers from forgetting to apply or release the brake and enable automatic parking after automatic braking, resulting in improved safety and comfort.
  • Conventional levers and cables are no longer necessary, allowing for greater design and engineering flexibility for the vehicle and the area around the driver's seat.

Opposed piston type electric parking brakes

Leveraging the technology it has cultivated through the development of brakes for high-performance vehicles, Akebono has developed an opposed-type electric parking brake caliper for sports-type electric vehicles.

This is the world’s first design in which a single piston in an opposed-type caliper serves both the service brake and parking brake functions. This design achieves significant weight reduction and is also capable of withstanding the high-temperature, high-load braking conditions typical of circuit driving.

Electric parking brake for small-to-mid sized trucks

Akebono has developed electric parking brakes for small- to mid-sized trucks, featuring a unique construction in which the output of a single motor is transmitted to two pistons via two spindle mechanisms.

A key feature is that generated output exceeds that of comparable mass-produced products from other manufacturers by 200%, and for which the company has obtained a patent. In addition, patents have also been secured for the incorporation of a differential mechanism that adjusts the output balance between the left and right sides, as well as for the integration of an electromagnetic clutch capable of maintaining parking clamping force.

The required electric current is 14 Amperes, equivalent to that of existing products for passenger cars, while weight is reduced by more than 3 kg per vehicle.
